Mexico celebrates its third energy auction in april

Guillermo Zúñiga, from the Energy Regulatory Commission, announced in Madrid

“The Energy Reform of Mexico is more than a policy, it is a revolution”. That convincing was Guillermo Zúñiga on November 15 in Madrid, where he attended as a speaker on a day organized by Saypower In the Spanish capital. There he announced that the third long-term energy auction will take place in April of this year with the participation of private buyers, as the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) was the only one who could attend so far.

Zúñiga valued the regulation that regulates the energy structure of his country, adding that “this energy reform is included in the Constitution, so it is not subject to changes in the short or medium term, as this would require the consensus of the whole Chamber”.

Mexico, with over 125 million people and an economy growing of 2.5% in 2015, has large international agreements because of its strategic position between the two American continents, which gives an idea of the need for energy demand in the next years.

At present, it has peaks of demand close to those of Spain (40,000MW) and the forecast is of an increase of its demand as a function of growth. This demand growth parallels as the liberalization energy thanks to auctions and compliance with the emission targets reflected in the Treaty of Paris (35% renewable energy in 2024 and 50% in 2030). Mexico has a potential of 20,000 MW of wind power and 6,000 MW of photo voltaic solar energy.

Zúñiga also explained the distributed generation as an element for energy of self-consumption. Now, the market is self-regulating and are being installed numerous models of consumption who sell their surplus energy unregulated.
